Protecting Your Eyes from Digital Eye Strain

Eye Strain

Your eyes are working too hard.

Many people today spend hours every day looking at screens. Computers, phones, tablets, and televisions are now a part of work, school, and everyday life. While technology makes many things easier, it can also take a toll on your eyes. At Reed Family Vision in Mission, Kansas, we regularly help patients manage digital eye strain and protect their vision in a screen-filled world.

Digital eye strain occurs when your eyes work harder than usual to focus on screens for long periods of time. Symptoms often include tired eyes, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and difficulty focusing. Many people also notice neck or shoulder pain after a long day of computer use.

One reason screens cause eye fatigue is because we tend to blink less when looking at digital devices. Blinking helps keep the eyes moist and comfortable. When blinking decreases, dryness and irritation can develop.

One simple way to reduce digital eye strain is to follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This allows the eye muscles to relax and refocus.

Adjusting screen brightness, increasing font size, and positioning screens slightly below eye level can also help reduce strain. For people who spend many hours working on computers, specialized computer glasses or lenses designed to filter blue light may provide additional comfort.

At Reed Family Vision, we work with patients to develop personalized solutions for digital eye strain. From evaluating your vision to recommending the right lenses, our goal is to help you see clearly and comfortably throughout your day.

If screen time is leaving your eyes tired or irritated, it may be time to explore solutions that support your eye health.
