Pediatric Eye Care FAQs
When should my child have their first eye exam?
Children grow so fast, and their vision is vastly different from adults. Toddlers, school-age kids, and adolescents have different vision needs, so it is important to have their eyes thoroughly examined yearly.
The American Optometric Association recommends kids have their first eye exam between 6-12 months, then at age 3, and annually starting at age 5.
My child is struggling in school. Should I schedule them for an eye exam?
Yes! A comprehensive eye exam at Reed Family Vision can determine if eye vision or eye issues could interfere with your child’s ability to do well and learn in school. Many vision problems can contribute to a child’s poor academic achievement.
Why Vision Screenings Are NOT Enough
A vision screening typically only checks distance vision. A child with perfect distance vision can still have problems focusing up close. Other vision areas that need to be checked are eye muscle alignment, color vision, depth perception and overall eye health. These are not typically checked during a vision screening. Please call the eye doctors at Reed Family Vision for your child’s Comprehensive Eye Exam today!
The most common symptoms to watch out for are:
Blurred vision at a distance or near
Squinting
Skipping lines or words
Decreased reading comprehension
Trouble changing focus from near to far or vice versa
Difficulty copying from the board
Closing or covering one eye when working up close
Double vision
Headaches
Avoidance of reading
Extreme fatigue from reading assignment or homework
At what age can kids start wearing contact lenses?
There is no set age limit for contact lenses. Typically, we start fitting children in contact lenses around the age of 10; however, for myopia control, we would want to start as soon as possible.
Daily or 1-Day contact lenses are recommended for all kids because they are safer for young wearers and have zero maintenance.
Did you know we participate in the InfantSEE eyecare program?
This is open for every infant. Early eye care is so very important.
This is a no-cost eye care assessment for children 6- 12 months. InfantSEE®, a public health program managed by Optometry Cares® -The AOA Foundation, is designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an essential part of infant wellness care to improve a child's quality of life. Under this program, participating doctors of optometry provide a comprehensive infant eye assessment between 6 and 12 months of age free of charge regardless of family income or access to insurance coverage.
